Step-By-Step

Create a Folder

From the folder view, click on the icon of 'My Places' to select it then click the 'New Folder' toolbar button. Enter a folder name then move to the right side and fill-in your new folder caracteristics if any.

Create a Placemark

From the folder view, click on the icon of 'My Places' to select it then click the 'New Placemark' toolbar button. Enter the placemark name then move to the right side and fill-in your new feature caracteristics.

Capture at Crosshair

Double-click a feature in the folder view or click the 'Preview in Google Earth' toolbar button to preview the selected feature. In google earth, drag the earth to the desired camera viewpoint location then go back to kml editor to:

  1. Click on the 'Location' tab then the 'Capture at Crosshair' button to capture the feature's exact location (longitude, latitude and altitude). If the feature does not have a camera viewpoint, it will be create.
  2. Move the earth again perhaps going further away from the earth to have a better view of the surroundings then click on the 'Camera' tab then the 'Capture at Crosshair' button to capture the exact camera viewpoint.
Create and Select a Balloon Template
  1. To create a balloon template, click on the 'Tools -> Balloon Templates...' menu item.
  2. Click the 'New' button to insert a new template then type in the title and description as it will appear in the balloon editor select a template dialog. The new template will be a clone of the selected template.
  3. You can move any templates up and down the list by clicking on the respective arrows.
  4. Change the template balloon content on the right side. Expand the balloon editor toolbar by clicking on the balloon editor top left down arrow.
  5. Click on 'Create Thumbnail...' to create the template thumbnail image.
  6. Click 'Close' to save all your changes or 'Cancel' to close without saving.
Create and Select an Email Template
  1. To create an email template, click on the 'Tools -> Email Templates...' menu item.
  2. Click the 'New' button, type a unique name then press Ok.
  3. Type the subject and the message text. Expand the email template editor toolbar by clicking the top left down arrow.
  4. Be sure that any images you include in your template can be accessible by the receiver(s). Use images that are located on the Internet.
  5. You can change the primary email template by changing the 'This is my primary template' item (bottom left).
  6. Click Apply to apply the changes without closing the dialog, click Ok to save and close your changes or click Close to close the dialog.

Email the Selected Place
  1. From KML Editor folder view, right-click on the feature to email then select the 'Email...'  popup menu item.
  2. Select the email message template from the list of available templates.
  3. Type the recipient email address in the 'To' field. Use a semi-colons to seperate email addresses if more than one recipient.
  4. Make changes to the subject or message fields if desired.
  5. Click 'Send' to send the email and close the dialog or click 'Cancel' to close the dialog without sending.
Create and Select an FTP Profile (Share/Post)
  1. To create an FTP profile, click on the 'Tools -> Share/Post Profiles...' menu item.
  2. Click the 'New' button, type a unique name then press Ok.
  3. Host Name: The FTP Server address to connect to. Typically a name like ftp.domainname.com or a dotted IP address like 192.168.0.20. You can use 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' if the ftp server you are connecting to is located on your computer.
  4. Port: FTP default port is 21. Leave at default unless your ftp connection uses a different port.
  5. Passive mode: If either your connection or uploads fail, try enabling the Passive Mode. Passive mode is often required when the computer is behind a firewall. In passive mode, the Client, not the Server forces the data connection.
  6. Random Data Port Range: Leave disabled and as is unless your ftp connection requires a narrowed down random port range.
  7. Server Directory: Defines where on the server to copy local files to. Note that some servers use case sensitive file and folder names. Often time the server directory is a sub web or a sub web and an initial folder within. Use a forward slash '/' to separate the folder levels. Leave empty to specify the root folder of the server. Example: mysite/myhelpfolder.
  8. Username, Password: Specify the name and password to use when logging onto the server.
  9. Remember password: KML Editor can remember your password encrypted. Although encryption is safe, it may be possible for a crafty person to crack the encryption but that person would have to have access to the hard drive where KML Editor is installed.
  10. Test Connection: Will attempt to establish a connection with the ftp server and will return a successful popup message or a failure popup message containing a brief description of the encountered problem.
  11. Click Ok to save your changes and close the dialog, click Apply to save the changes or click Close to close the dialog without saving your changes.
Share/Post the Selected Place
  1. From KML Editor folder view, right-click on the feature to share/post then select the 'Share/Post...' popup menu item.
  2. Select an ftp profile then click 'Connect'.
  3. Type a filename and choose the file type 'kml' or 'kmz'.
  4. From the current ftp list of folders and files click on the folder where you want to save the file.
  5. Click the 'Upload Now' button to start uploading.
  6. You can manage your ftp folders and files and preview files by right-clicking a file or folder.
  7. Click 'Close' to close the connection and close this dialog.
